Why A Unifying Candidate Will Win The USA Presidency

Legislation — be it walls, Medicare for all, free college, fear demagoguery and blaming “them”, prohibition of medical procedures (or prohibition of any kind), war, outlawing discrimination, criminal reform — the list goes on and on — will NOT change the American crisis of identity. What will change American trajectory of fragmenting and dissolution is cultural soul shift. That is a very different dialogue and soul shift. Legislation follows.

Cultural shift leadership is a galvanizing activity that puts forth aspirational specific positions and simultaneously leaves the door open for divergent and compromised ways of achieving those aspirations — and embraces dissent from the positions as alternative voices worthy of respect so long as they do not cruelly and egregiously repress, embody hurtful bigotry, fear or hate.

Do we think an American truly would willfully support denying a fellow suffering human medical treatment and watch them suffer and die needlessly just because they lacked financial resources to gain access to treatment? When did we stop the American dream of education, good roads, clean water, a working immigration policy, religious tolerance, honoring the environmental bounty of our land or abandon the idea of innocence until proven guilty and abiding by law? We haven’t. We have let polarizing ways, methods, ideologies and agenda driven prejudices distract us from the values and focus us instead on fragmenting means.

Ah, Lincoln and higher angels. We will be energized by a unifying candidate. If I had my stereotype pick she would be a middle income Hispanic mom of 5 kids with a masters in world literature and an eclectic set of habits such as attending Catholic Mass, doing fund raisers for Muslim refugees, helping her Oglala Sioux cousin with protection of Native American Indian lands and volunteering at a drug counseling center. She would love to dance and be quick to make friends with ordinary people and laugh a lot.

Well, I may not get my stereotype version of a unifying candidate. But, we will have one and we will rally as Americans and vote that leader into our highest office.
