Two years ago my son died at age 39 from severe schizophrenia. Of course there was a complete autopsy report, the “cause of death” is imprinted on my mind. Jack was a brilliant man tortured by voices, paranoia and all the classic symptoms for last 8 years of his life. His self prescribed attempts to use alcohol and opiates weren’t helpful as far as I could see. MDMA seemed at times to be helpful, but it was absent professional psychoanalysis and administration. Mental / psychological suffering comes with the same cruel vicious cycle as most dysfunctions, the sufferer cannot earn the money or do the actions to help themselves. My hope is the so called “long arc of justice” bends toward an open minded and clinical rational view of psychoactive substances, AND, even more importantly the public support and funding for trained practitioners and settings.
