This idea is simple, true, wise — and in practice can become somewhat complex and nuanced. I’ll give my personal example. I earned more than I spent and saved up over a million dollars. I wanted to live and share nature so I bought 80 acres of rolling terrain forested with trees, creeks and ponds— rough and overgrown and on a big river but within 60 minutes of one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas. Just the land was 35% of savings (spending a huge chunk of security). Restoration to natural habitat, native plants and animals, clearing, roads, water well, fencing, building self-architected “reverse aquariums” (houses with all glass walls for observing nature) used another 35% of hard earned savings security. This has all been growth, an uncomfortable and uncertain process of what appears to be the exchange of simplicity and security and ease for complexity, uncertainty and hard work. Now I am close to beginning nature restoration vacation rentals for people who want a break from the city. Will it all work? I have no idea, complete free fall. So, I spent less than I earned until I didn’t. Now I am seeking to unfold a gift-dream that I hope has meaning. It is a highly uncomfortable unsettling paradox to a simple idea that worked until I turned it upside down. Maybe I have lost my mind but somehow in my psyche it feels like uncertain awkward growth.
