This article, and Bill Maher’s monologue, start to scratch at the surface. There are a couple of responses that introduce 2nd questions such as “American obsession with guns” (just exactly why is there such a uniquely passionate obsession to own, carry, fetish and justify more guns in private ownership … America has more private firearms than people) and “deeper lesions”. I am a rancher who has a rifle that has been used rarely to euthanize obviously rabid animals (mostly skunks, raccoons) and on even more rare occasions a mortally sick calf (somehow a stiff wire was in a hay bale and the poor animal had swallowed the wire and had pierced and infected internal organs). I have no illusions about “freedom” preserved — the US Army could literally put a missile through my bathroom window. My caution is not “bad guys with guns” (rare) but fearful/angry people with guns (fairly common). Am I for gun regulations? Of course. Do I have an explanation for wanting to turn elementary schools into armed camps? No. Do I think the root cause is 2, 3, 4, etc. questions deep (beyond and more complex than questions about unfettered massive distribution of firearms, mental health, social media, cultural/social dysfunctions, etc.)? Yes. We are so divisive the discussions themselves lack the science based guidance of reason, calm, logic, statistics, hypothesis and testing/observation. Maybe if some 2nd questions like this article get a little attention the seed of self questioning and open minded willingness will grow.
