It would be more useful to stop thinking and discussing AI (Artificial Intelligence) or GMI (General Machine Intelligence) using our current paradigm. This approach does not convey the recurrent observed intent and energy patterned by the cosmos. What we see as the consistent pattern is non-entropic evolution of increased complexity associated with adaptation, i.e. CAS (Complex Adaptive Systems).

An example would be our human cells. The typical liver, heart or brain cell has over 1,000 mitochondria. The mitochondria was in times past a free standing bacteria that was engulfed into the cellular membrane and became a truly symbiotic and synergetic part of a bigger whole (while maintaining its own DNA) as a driving energy production within a cell. That translates to the real change: Becoming essential in the CAS of the human immune system and human metabolism process (to name two examples).

There are plenty of CAS examples — a large city, a large democracy, capitalism, a terrorist organization. There are attributes that seem likely characteristics for developing CAS theory. Coherency of (by example) the human immune system seems to “know” itself and reject foreign entities like pathogens or transplants. Interaction to stimuli with response including non-proportional leverage response is a CAS characteristic. A vaccine can trigger immunity in the autoimmune system. An attack on, or threat to, a democracy or terrorist group can often raise consensus and organizational cooperation absent except for the external stimulus.

The point is that stored program control (software code running on hardware) even if self improving and following a directive that generates novel solutions superior to human capabilities is still simply an element in a larger system that is adapting and evolving. If we achieve general machine intelligence it is not an isolated actor — it is a species part of an evolving system called the known cosmos. The mistake we make in discussing AI is rooted in the human hubris of thinking our (human) consciousness is autonomous. Human consciousness is part of the consciousness of the trees, birds, solar system, galaxies. The whole thing is evolving. To the extent GMI is accomplished it will simply be part of the overall enormous CAS called the universe.
