Tesla has this huge advantage which is Elon Musk as the rapid fire unfettered unquestioned decision maker who is highly involved, hands on. Walmart had that when Sam Walton was alive, same with Herb Keller at Southwest or Steve Jobs at Apple, Walt Disney in building Disney. I’m so idealistic I wish it wasn’t true … I wish systemically an organization/culture was as efficient as the charismatic leader. Authoritarianism is generally way more efficient, I also so wish that was not true. It worries me that if the United States struggles with economic woes we will abandon a often struggling and usually bureaucratic government for a more efficient one headed by a strongman authoritarian. If we think about it objectively, I believe EV and associated benefits could be the trigger that accelerates China even faster. Forget anyone in particular or current news or current US divisiveness and rants … checks and balances (western democracy) is inherently inefficient, unstable. In relating back to this article China would be the most likely market to scale adopt and copy any innovation (there are lots of VW cars in China). VW and Tesla benefit short term but the powerhouse (pun intended) is likely the EV huge market with the most drivers, most engineers, least petroleum and least regard for intellectual property rights. If the battery leap frog happens then China, not the innovator, will likely be the scale and exploitation of the advance.
