Our response in 2001 was heavy handed military action, exactly the most ideal reaction an extremist but limited ideological cult bent on dismantling a stable peaceful open society could hope for when staging for publicity a murderous dramatic terrorist action. Prosecution under available law is the rational avenue for when atrocities are committed by a non-state persons or sects — regardless of the fragrance, insanity or emotionally deranged motivation of the perpetrators. If the parents of an innocent murdered child want to lash out with broad unprocessed vigilante retribution the emotion is understandable but authorities step in with law and order rather than allow descent into escalating spiral of mindless violence and likely loss of justice, due process and cascading violence that inevitably results in more tragedies to still more innocent victims. Unless used with great restraint and clear mission “military power” can quickly become an oxymoron as has happened repeatedly to the empires that litter recorded human history.
