Of all our theories — fundamental forces forming stars, stars forming elements, elements forming systems that somehow jump a chasm to organic — nothing to me seems as improbable as forming consciousness or then becoming conscious of consciousness (if it is real). We want to find patterns and the search tends to paradigms which when broken demonstrate how much stranger the forces are in the improved model than the most unlikely possibilities in the old model.
