Mr. Rich, you and I may be incorrect but I am in violent agreement with you. And, I think the filter I read into your response applies to virtually everything. I’ll just pick examples stream of consciousness as I type this response. Walmart - people used to congratulate themselves for pointing out perhaps they were more of a logistics company than retailer. What if they have to be first and foremost a data capture, analytics and software upgradeable and guidance company to competitively do what is thought of as the mechanics of their business? I’d make the same argument about long term stability for Delta Airlines, DuPont, a farmer or the Texas Department of Transportation. On and on. My filter is that competitiveness of performance, user satisfaction, adaptability, scale, efficiency, lowering cost, improving quality, creating patents or unique intellectual property or insights … everything comes back to the capture, use, deployment and exploitation of data (information, insights, upgrade over the air, etc.). Batteries, transmission, better material, improved functionality, design, user relationships, manufacturing, distribution, support, cost reduction, improved quality whatever gets optimally exploited and exercised by whatever enterprise embraces a maximum end to end data capture, software as much as possible, machine intelligence, systems integration attitude and skill. In this case Elon Musk, regardless of anyone’s opinion, knows the truly heavy and nontrivial burden of the mechanics of design, mass manufacturing, support, etc. I’m not discounting battery and materials and manufacturing are important. BUT, Musk comes from a software mindset, designing computer games as a kid. When I trade in my current vehicle I’ll use the same decision criteria that I do on a smartphone. When, as I do for now, pick an iPhone it’s not for battery, display, 5G, camera, etc. although those things are important. In my perspective, for me, iPhone provides me a “system” that is integrate from the time the thing is designed and alive as I repair or upgrade right up until the last day I use it. Sorry for the long reply, I may not have understood what you intended but what you wrote as a response struck a cord of belief that I have.
