Maybe I missed it in the comments but the assessment that jumped out at me was this “first death” hypothesis of loss of purpose. As humans we have a consciousness (for instance in this experiment of mice and conceptually hypothesized it for our own species). We do seem, perhaps, to have some amount of abstract evolutionary capability. I’m all for expanding as an interplanetary species but not just as an expansion of time space but as a method of aspiration, purpose. There are a lot of other ways we could expand consciousness for meaning including a new paradigm that sounds like the cliche hippie mantra of “peace, love, understanding”. Bottom line, we have the option of creating a lot more space for soul meaning — inward, consciousness and common consciousness probably having more fertile ground for expansiveness than even the vastness of the cosmos itself.
