I live in a rural Texas county that voted 90% for Donald Trump in 2016. Trump flags are absolutely an identity and meant to send a signal of intimidation and aggression. The Trump flags fly at top of numerous flag poles and from poles mounted on pickup trucks — streaming and snapping through the air like a pennant on the radio antenna of a Hummer in combat maneuvers. In some cases we have American flags with Trump’s face dominating the center of the flag. The message is not so much “vote for Trump” as an assertion of power through force, intimidation and oppression of dissent.
