I enjoyed this article — impassioned, provocative and credible. It seems to me that to reduce the consumption levels to the degree suggested there would need to be a fairly radical and broad shift in underlying human consciousness, attitudes and paradigms. This level of massive change in the conviction of existential priorities and threats involves a huge leap — I’m not optimistic that Homo sapiens will make that kind of change outside miserable, dire, pervasive and unavoidable conditions of motivation. I’m less inclined to believe we will make the choice of change than believe conditions will be forced. My bet is extinction. The earth is a self correcting organism, it’s seen worse and will probably heal itself and try consciousness again.
