By my estimation “the drug problem” and “mental health” are not two separate things. The high demand for drugs by people in the United States is not a supply problem (the “war on drugs” has failed miserably because killing drug distributors improves profit via increased risk and more distributors rush to fill the empty supply gap. That assessment may not “feel” good to our desire for control and retribution but 50 years of data bear it out. Drugs are a demand problem from self medication (sometimes to the point of overdose). We desperately need greatly improved and expanded mental health resources. By the way, depending on location as much as 30% of homeless you see are US military veterans. It’s sad and getting worse.
